Album Title : Harry Styles

Artist : Harry Styles

Release date : 12 May 2017

Overall Rating : 3/5

On the 7th of April 2017, Harry Style released his first debut solo single ‘Sign of The Times’ which left us wanting more. The single was more of an indie genre with lyrics so deep it left us with the impression of how Harry Styles had matured from his One Direction days. So we anticipated the release of his new self-titled album, ‘Harry Styles’.

My overall review of the album is that it is not too bad. I would call it the ‘baby bear’ of albums-not too hot but at the same time not too cold. In simpler terms, I was not overly impressed by the songs but at the same time it was not disappointing. There are many songs in the album where the lyrics I would describe as real and full of meaning for example like per mentioned ‘Sign of The Times’, ‘Two Ghosts’ and ‘Sweet Creature’. The thing I like most about the album is it really has the essence of olden day tunes from back in the 70s where music was at its peak. Songs from the album like ‘Kiwi’ and ‘Only Angel’ gives the album a real kick with more upbeat vibes but the same time a has a tender mellowness about it. These two songs have a little bit of a rock feel to it reminding me of songs by the likes of Nirvana and Pink Floyd.

The rest of the songs have a very relaxed and chilled vibe to it. These are the songs you can imagine being played in your local café and also at the end of your television series drama as the episode is about to close. Upon listening to the songs, many of it had lacked a sort of substance; maybe when the music video is released for these songs or it is put in the movie at the right place, these songs may have an appeal to it. However there is nothing very special about the songs that it would make me play the song on repeat on my playlist. Another thing that was good about the album was that how the genre for almost each song is different so if you were to listen down the Harry Styles playlist, you will not be listening to a repetitive tune and tone which tends to happen with other artists in their album. This wide range of genres in his album says a lot about his ability to sing and also his potential to make good music and is bound to make great songs in the future. He is definitely an artist to look out for in the future as with enough time and hard work, he is definitely going to find his niche and will be performing some great songs in the future.

My prediction for the album is that it is going to definitely do well in the first few weeks or months until the next big thing comes along as his album is good but it will be easily forgotten. My point of view is none of the songs on the album would ever reach evergreen status.
