In 2008, Georgetown was named a World Heritage site and this all happened on July 7th. This is why this coming Friday on the 7th of July 2017, Georgetown will be celebrating its Georgetown World Heritage City Day. For some of you, this will be a public holiday and a day for you to just kick back and relax. However, for those who want to celebrate the pride and joy of Georgetown, Penang, there are quite a number of fun-filled events stretched out across the weekend.

The event starts of on Friday with a Heritage trail which starts from Chowrasta market and moves on down Jalan Penang as you are shown all the wonderful trade of Penang. The meeting point is at Chowrasta Market and it has an entrance fee of only RM30 also begins at 9 am for the Mandarin speakers and 10am for the English speakers it begins at 10am. There will also be a tour of St. George’s church on this day at 2.30pm.

On Saturday there will be a few more site excursion which will give you a better understanding and a greater view of some of the heritage buildings in Georgetown. The buildings you will get to explore will beat Wadda Gurdwara Sahib at 10am, Masjid Melayu Lebuh Acheh at 2.30 and Masjid Kapitan Keling at 5pm. The event that I will be looking forward to on that day will be the Street Festival which will be all over the World Heritage Site. You will get to learn the different dialects, mingle with the Penangite community and see some great performances. I am sure this will be quite an enjoyable experience.

On Sunday there is a really fun event to look forward to which is the Interactive Heritage Games where teams of 2-4 will go around Georgetown solving puzzles and uncovering hidden mysteries. Entrance fee for each team is RM100 but it is guaranteed to be a fun experience. The meeting point is at Georgetown World Heritage Incorporated and will begin at 8.30am and should finish by about 12.30pm. After that there will be a couple of site excursions, one at Kong Hock Keong at 2.30pm and one more at the Sri Mahamariamman Temple at 5pm. That just about wraps up Georgetown Heritage Day festival.

I am sure the event is going to be fun-filled and an enlightening event learning about the history and the culture of Georgetown and what it has to offer. So I look forward to seeing you there at the Georgetown World Heritage City Day.
